DEVICES TODAY
, whether they be automobile brakes or washing machines or audio systems or mobile phones, are becoming increasingly "intelligent'' and autonomous. As a simple example, your automatic clothes washer will set and control the entire wash cycle and attendant parameters (water temperature, detergent feed, spin rate and timings) and even talk to you, based on the nature of the clothes (cotton or silk or polyester and the like) indicated by you through a setting switch.More...

The Indian tech industry - A perspective
The IT 'outsourcing' boom in India is now turning into 'off-shoring' boom. The earlier one was more of doing the 'non-core' software development for any of companies from the western world (mainly from the US and Europe) just because of low cost engineering talent in India. The later one is more of doing 'core' product development from India and it requires real 'Quality' engineers. Apart from that more and more companies are flocking into promoting career stream completely based on technical growth, where an individual can grow till the level of Vice President by taking the technical path. The Embedded Boom
The main growth drivers for embedded software in the next five years will be mobile telecommunications, military applications (programmes such as e-Textiles of the U.S. Department of Defence in the light of the fight against terrorism) and providing more intelligence and connectivity to consumer devices. New areas are opening up like autonomous robots with embedded programming for personal use, such as the robot pets from Sony.
Geographically, the embedded software market is dominated by North America, accounting for 53 per cent of the worldwide shipments in 2001, followed by Europe (25 per cent) and the Asia-Pacific region (17 per cent). In the next five years, North America will still maintain its dominance but the Asia-Pacific market will be growing fast and may equal the European share.More...
