Indian Institute of Astrophysics recruits many candidates as engineering trainee, research associate, research scientist, non-teaching staffs, faculty members and also in management cadre. When it comes to research jobs in IIA, candidates are selected for project trainee, project scientists, fellowship, research assistant, scientist and others. The candidates with NCTVT certificate or any certificate in trade from a recognized training institute, diploma and graduates are usually selected for junior and assistant positions in research department. Master degree in physics, astrophysics and astronomy is usually sought for middle level scientists and experienced candidates are placed in the higher positions.

When it comes to technical side, candidates with knowledge in handling lab equipments, familiarized with laboratory tests, knowledge in analysis programs, LAB VIEW, C++, MATLAB and other software packages are usually sought. Engineering candidates are selected as engineering trainee and diploma candidates are selected as project trainee or assistants. The Joint Entrance Screening Test is the Indian Institute of Astrophysics eligibility test. It is not just for IIA, a lot of other institutes like IUCAA, IUC-DAEF, JNCASR and others would select their candidates for research fellowship through JEST. The pattern for JEST includes multiple choice questions in the relevant field and with negative scores for wrong answers. Apart from JEST, the institute also conducts a written test (if required).</br> The candidates who have passed the written test or have met the required criteria would be called in for the interview process. In some cases, the candidates with higher educational qualification than the minimum required will only be called in for the interview. This is the case when the number of applicants is higher than expected.

Ph.D candidates and candidates with experience in teaching are only selected for Indian Institute of Astrophysics vacancies in faculty side. For the management side, the officer or manager positions are filled with candidates having master degree in commerce or management, CA, ICWA and other related fields. For low level positions in management side, the candidates with bachelor degree in commerce, management, science or arts are selected. The selection process for management candidates includes a written test and interview.

Unlike other government jobs in India, the candidates are not selected through their score in GATE, IIAST or other common written exam.
