Job Description

Monitor and assess critically ill patients, providing necessary care and treatment.
 
Administer medications, IV infusions, and other treatments as per doctor’s instructions.
 
Operate and manage life-supporting medical equipment such as ventilators and cardiac monitors.
 
Maintain accurate patient records and report any changes in patient conditions.
 
Collaborate with doctors, specialists, and other healthcare professionals for comprehensive patient care.
 
Follow infection control protocols and ensure a safe environment for patients.
 
Provide emotional support to patients and their families during critical situations.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Patient Care and Monitoring:

    • Monitor patients' vital signs and medical conditions continuously, including heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate, and temperature.

    • Administer medications, IV fluids, and blood products as prescribed by physicians.

    • Perform and document assessments regularly to detect changes in a patient's condition.

    • Respond promptly to changes in the patient’s condition, such as arrhythmias, respiratory distress, or drops in blood pressure.

  2. Collaboration with Medical Team:

    • Work closely with physicians, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, and other healthcare providers to plan and execute patient care.

    • Assist in carrying out medical orders from doctors and update the medical team on patient progress.

    • Participate in interdisciplinary rounds to discuss patient care plans and adjust treatments as necessary.

  3. Ventilator and Life Support Management:

    • Manage and monitor patients on mechanical ventilation and other life support devices.

    • Assess and adjust ventilator settings based on patients' needs, and administer related therapies such as oxygen and suction.

    • Assist in the weaning process from life support when patients are stable enough.

  4. Patient Safety and Infection Control:

    • Ensure that all equipment is functioning properly, including monitors, ventilators, infusion pumps, and dialysis machines.

    • Follow stringent infection control protocols to prevent the spread of infections, including regular hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and safe disposal of contaminated materials.

    • Ensure patient positioning, mobility, and skin care to prevent pressure ulcers and complications.

  5. Patient and Family Communication:

    • Provide emotional support to patients and their families, explaining complex medical situations, treatment options, and care procedures.

    • Communicate updates to families regarding the patient’s condition, treatment progress, and prognosis in a compassionate and clear manner.

    • Address concerns from patients’ families and involve them in decision-making when appropriate.

  6. Documentation and Record Keeping:

    • Accurately document all patient assessments, interventions, medication administration, and any significant changes in the patient's condition.

    • Maintain detailed and clear electronic health records (EHR) and communicate effectively with other team members to ensure continuity of care.

  7. Emergency Response and Critical Interventions:

    • Respond quickly and appropriately in emergency situations, such as cardiac arrest, respiratory failure, or sepsis.

    • Provide advanced life support, including CPR, intubation, and defibrillation, when necessary.

    • Assist with procedures like central line insertion, intubation, and chest tube placement, ensuring patient comfort and safety.

  8. Pain and Symptom Management:

    • Assess and manage patients’ pain and comfort, using both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic methods.

    • Administer pain medications, sedatives, or muscle relaxants in consultation with the medical team.

    • Monitor for side effects or complications from medications and adjust treatment as necessary.

  9. Continuing Education and Professional Development:

    • Stay current with the latest advancements in critical care nursing and maintain certifications such as ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support).

    • Participate in ongoing education programs, workshops, and professional development activities to enhance skills and knowledge in intensive care.

    • Adhere to hospital policies, procedures, and safety standards.
