Job Description

An optical fiber technician, also known as a cable technician, cable installer, or telecommunications technician, installs, maintains, and repairs fiber optic cables and networks. These cables transmit data, voice, and video over long distances, and are used for high-speed internet, television, and telephone services.

Their responsibilities include:

Installing: Working with clients to plan installations, and installing cables in a variety of environments, including underground, indoor, and aerial
Splicing: Using hand tools, epoxy, or mechanical equipment to splice cables
Testing: Inspecting or testing lines or cables, recording and analyzing test results to assess transmission characteristics and locate faults or malfunctions
Maintaining: Ensuring that fiber cable infrastructure is working correctly and meeting customer needs, and organizing scheduled maintenance routines
Terminating: Terminating cable utilizing a variety of connectors
Measuring: Measuring signal strength at utility poles using electronic test equipment
