Job Description

Prepare and maintain the operation theater (OT) before and after surgeries.

Ensure all surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies are sterile and ready for procedures.

Assist surgeons and nurses during operations by handling instruments and managing surgical equipment.

Operate and monitor OT machines, including anesthesia machines and surgical lights.

Maintain infection control protocols and sterilization standards.

Assist in patient positioning and preparation before surgery.

Handle the safe disposal of surgical waste following hospital guidelines.

Keep records of surgical procedures and inventory of OT supplies.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Pre-Operative Preparation:

Sterilization and Setup: Sterilize and arrange surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment in preparation for surgeries, ensuring they are sterile and ready for use.
OT Setup: Set up the operating theatre as per the surgical procedure requirements, including arranging surgical instruments, drapes, and sterile covers.
Equipment Check: Ensure that all surgical equipment, including anesthesia machines, suction devices, and monitors, are functioning properly and ready for use.
Patient Preparation: Assist in positioning patients on the operating table, ensuring proper alignment and comfort, and applying drapes and sterile covers.

2. Assisting During Surgery:

Instrument Handling: Provide the surgeon and surgical team with the required surgical instruments, sutures, and other supplies during the procedure.
Surgical Assistance: Assist with retracting tissue, suctioning, and any other duties that aid the surgical team during the procedure.
Monitoring Instruments: Monitor and maintain the functionality of surgical equipment during the surgery, ensuring everything operates smoothly.
Infection Control: Ensure that all infection control protocols are followed to minimize the risk of contamination during surgeries.

3. Post-Operative Duties:

Clean-up: After the surgery, clean and disinfect all instruments and equipment, and prepare them for sterilization.
Assist in Patient Recovery: Assist with the safe transfer of the patient from the operating table to the recovery room.
Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of surgical procedures, equipment used, and any issues encountered during the procedure.
Waste Disposal: Ensure that all waste and biohazard materials are disposed of following hospital protocols for safety and hygiene.

4. Maintenance and Equipment Management:

Equipment Maintenance: Regularly check and perform minor repairs and maintenance on surgical equipment.
Inventory Control: Keep track of surgical instruments and supplies, ensuring that stock levels are adequate and notifying the supervisor when reordering is needed.
Sterilization and Safety Protocols: Ensure compliance with sterilization standards and hospital safety protocols in the handling of equipment and instruments.

5. Collaboration and Communication:

Team Coordination: Work closely with surgeons, anesthetists, nurses, and other medical staff to ensure smooth coordination during procedures.
Communication: Ensure clear and effective communication within the team, especially regarding any immediate changes during the surgery or equipment malfunctions.
