Job Description



Invitation to pursue Ph.D. Programme in specialized areas of Physics, Chemistry, Life Sciences and Engineering Sciences at the Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology, Indore.


Qualification : For Physics candidates: M.Sc. degree in Physics with a minimum of 60% overall marks, and who have cleared Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST 2016) and/or CSIR-UGC NET in June/December 2015 (JRF, not lecturership).

For Chemistry candidates: M.Sc. degree in Chemistry with minimum 60% overall marks, and who have qualified in the CSIR-UGC NET (JRF/ lectureship) held in June/ December 2015 or who will qualify in the GATE-2016 examination, are eligible to apply.

For Life Sciences candidates: M.Sc. degree in Life Sciences/Biotechnology with minimum 60% overall marks, and who have qualified in the CSIR-UGC NET (JRF/lectureship) held in June/December 2015 or BET-2015 or who will qualify in the GATE-2016 examination, are eligible to apply. Candidates with botany /agricultural science background should not apply.

For Engineering Sciences candidates: Master's degree in Engineering/Technology or equivalent degree in Mechanical / Production engineering / Materials Science, with First class or at least 60% marks or at least 6.5 CGPA on a 10-point scale and valid GATE score (i.e., GATE-2014, GATE-2015 and GATE-2016). The candidate must have Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical/ Production/ Materials Engineering.

Those applicants who are completing the qualifying degree in summer of 2016 can also apply, provided they have minimum of 60% overall marks in the completed semesters. In the event of their selection, the final degree mark sheet would have to be submitted by November 1, 2016. Continuation in the Ph.D. programme will be subject to the candidate obtaining minimum 60% marks overall (converted to percentage as per the concerned university’s rules). 5 year integrated M.S. (of IISERs) will be treated at par with 5 year integrated M.Sc.

Age limit :The applicant should be born on or after August 1, 1990.(Age relaxation will be Five years for SC/ ST candidates, Three years for OBC candidates and Ten years for persons with disabilities (PWD))

Selection process: The selection of the students for the Ph.D. programme will be a two-step process:-

Screening of the applications, followed by Interview of the short-listed candidates by the Selection Committees at RRCAT

For Physics candidates, the short-list shall be prepared based on the applicant's score/rank in JEST 2016 and/ or CSIR-UGC NET 2015.

For Chemistry candidates, the short-list shall be prepared based on the applicant's rank/score in CSIR-UGC NET 2015 and/ or GATE 2016.

For Life Sciences candidates, the short-list shall be prepared based on the applicant's rank/score in CSIR-UGC NET 2015 / BET-2015 / GATE 2016.

For Engineering Sciences candidates, the short-list shall be prepared based on the applicant's rank/score in GATE 2014/ GATE 2015 / GATE 2016.

The short-listed Physics candidates shall be called for interview to be conducted tentatively on May 9, 10, 11, 12 & June 13, 14, 15, 16, 2016, at RRCAT, Indore. The applicant must indicate choice of their interview date in the application form, failing which they will have to appear for interview on one of the above dates assigned by RRCAT.The short-listed Chemistry and Life Sciences candidates shall be called for interview to be conducted tentatively on 9, 10 June 2016.The short-listed Engineering Sciences candidates shall be called for interview to be conducted tentatively on 2, 3 June 2016 at RRCAT, Indore.

All the outstation applicants called for interview will be paid to and fro sleeper class train fare by the shortest route or the actual fare, whichever is less. This is subject to the verification of their eligibility from the original documents before the interview. Please note that candidates appearing for interview will have to submit proof of overall ≥ 60% marks in the completed semesters. In absence of this, the candidate will not be interviewed and the travel cost will not be reimbursed.

The candidates selected in the interviews will be asked to report at RRCAT, Guest House and Hostels Complex on July 11, 2016. On July 12, they will be sent for medical examination. The Physics candidates will visit all the guides of the Ph.D. vacancies offered to get a thorough idea about the Ph.D. topics offered. This process and the assignment of Ph.D. topic to each candidate will converge by July 28, 2016. The Chemistry, Life and Engineering Sciences candidates will be deputed to BARC Training School, Mumbai, for their one year course work, and the Physics candidates will carry out their one year course work at BARC Training School, Indore, from the first week of August 2016
